A5 Report
01:27
Sleek and elegant German coupes are nothing new, though the A5 is the first of this size that Audi has built in a long time. It’s a good all-round package that comes close to matching the BMW 3-Series with a fine range of engines, a high quality interior and an enjoyable driving experience. It’s also a rival for the Mercedes-Benz CLK. As has become expected of Audi, the car is packed with technology – some of which can be seen and some of which can’t – living up to Audi’s slogan: “Vorsprung durch Technik”; progress through technology.
The driver gets a great driving position, thanks to a steering wheel that adjusts for height and reach and a multi-adjustable seat (although adjustment is electric only on top models).
Visibility is a problem from a number of angles. When cornering or turning out of T-Junctions, chunky windscreen pillars obstruct the view, while a small rear screen makes for poor visibility out of the back – especially with two passengers in the back.
The dash is easy to use, with a good mixture of traditional push-button and switches and functions controlled through a 'scroll wheel'.
Although there are two seats in the back, these are strictly for children only. A lack of headroom makes it unsuitable for adults, while passengers with long legs will find the rear very cramped indeed. It’s also very difficult to get in-and-out of. Aside from that, it’s easy to get along with. The seats are comfortable and multi-adjustable and the interior oozes style and is meticulously put together. On the move it’s fairly serene, with wind and road noise suppressed at all but the highest speeds. The car is well insulated against engine noise too, although it can be evident – especially the V8 in the S5 – when you want it to be.
Every A5 has 17-inch alloy wheels, MP3-compatible single CD radio, trip computer, xenon headlamps, dual zone climate control, electric front windows, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, auto headlamps and auto wipers, speed-sensitive power steering, parking sensors, electronic stability programme, twin exhaust pipes, split/folding rear seat. S5 adds 18-inch alloy wheels, ‘S’ sports suspension, ‘S Sports seats with electric adjustment and lumbar support, nappa leather, three-spoke ‘S multi-function steering wheel, ‘S’ instrument dials and ‘S’ body styling.
